Essential oils for thyroid can help with the conditions of an under or over active gland. As someone who suffers from hypothyroidism, I am constantly trying to feel better. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland that produces and releases hormones to regulate your metabolism and other healthy body functions.

There are many thyroid sufferers who, like me, have had many issues with their thyroid over the years. The American Thyroid Association estimates that more than 20 million Americans experience some type of thyroid disease.

Unfortunately, too many outside factors can push us to higher stress levels which downgrades our health, and the thyroid takes a beating.

Chances are you’ve heard about the benefits of essential oils for holistic treatments and quick relief, but did you know that these little gems can actually help with thyroid conditions too? Essential oils for thyroid is a natural treatment that you can get started with right away!

Don’t know if you have hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism? Then consider first taking an at-home thyroid test to find the best solution for you!

Do Essential Oils Treat Hyperthyroidism or Hypothyroidism?

Yes, and also no. There are no essential oils for thyroid on the market that will eliminate your hypothyroidism or stop your body from producing too much thyroid hormone.

However, some oils can help detox your body from heavy metals, which is often a comorbid condition of those with hypothyroidism. Essential oils for thyroid can also alleviate the symptoms of a thyroid imbalance.

Hypothyroidism vs. Hyperthyroidism

If you feel like your thyroid isn’t working correctly, it can be tricky to know whether it’s because your thyroid is overactive or underactive. It’s important to know how your body is functioning so you know how to support your system. Here’s how to tell the difference between hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

  • Hypothyroid: This is when your thyroid is underactive and not producing as many hormones as it should. This can affect your heart, brain, muscles, skin, and other body systems. Sometimes this is subtle and difficult to diagnose. Other times it can be severe, as in the case of Hashimoto’s disease where the immune system actually attacks the thyroid. Hypothyroidism is also much more common for females than hyperthyroidism. Simple things we do and use every day have heavy metals in them which we take into our system unknowingly and can also be a cause. Even copper toxicity is known to cause hypothyroidism.
    • Symptoms of Hypothyroidism: Sudden or unexplained weight gain, sensitivity to cold, lethargy, fatigue, hair loss, hair or skin or dryness, muscle weakness, stiff joints, irregular periods, constipation, enlarged thyroid gland, irritability, or even a slow heart rate.
  • Hyperthyroid: This is an overactive thyroid that is producing too many hormones in the body. This causes the body to break down prematurely. One possible cause is Graves’ Disease, but it can also be caused by overuse of thyroid supplements.
    • Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism: Unexplained weight loss or inability to gain weight, heat sensitivity or excessive sweating, excessive or persistent hunger, restlessness or fatigue, light menstruation, insomnia, diarrhea, hair loss, tremors, fast heart rate or abnormal heart rhythm, nervousness, hyperactivity, or panic attacks.

It is important to understand the difference between an over active or under active thyroid and the symptoms of each.

  • Pine: This is another great option for decreasing inflammation and treating sore joints. Be aware that pine oil is toxic and should never be ingested. All essential oils are only intended for topical use.

How to Use Essential Oils if You Feel Thyroid Nodules

If you’re concerned about your thyroid, put two fingers at the base of your neck (below the Adam’s apple area) and feel for the butterfly-shaped gland. You may also be able to see it when you swallow. Thyroid nodules are lumps that form in the thyroid gland. These lumps can be solid or filled with liquid.

If they are swollen or inflamed, you’ll be able to see them when you swallow. In severe cases, they can compress your esophagus, making it difficult to breathe. Essential oils for thyroid can be applied topically directly to this area to treat symptoms of thyroid nodules.

Everyday stress will only aggravate your thyroid symptoms. Studies show powerful evidence in using essential oils for thyroid to also decrease cortisol and lower stress levels. This can support your thyroid function and inhibit the free radical attacks on your body.

Daily Thyroid Boost Regimen

Blends can be a beautiful way to combine essential oils for thyroid relief. In addition to using blends every day, I also use a regimen of myrrh, basil, and marjoram individually to harness their powerful benefits.

    1. I rub a drop of myrrh oil over my thyroid area each day. The smell is a bit strong, but it wears off quickly.
    2. A drop or two basil oil rubbed on the adrenals each morning is a great way to support the system! The adrenal glands are located on either side of your back, just below each rib cage.
    3. A drop or two of marjoram can be rubbed over the spleen for antibody support.

Don’t worry, you’ll look happy as her soon enough!
